EDGARDO

A New Play by Carey Perloff

Inspired by the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a seven-year-old Jewish boy in 1858 Bologna who was abducted by the Pope because he had supposedly been baptized, EDGARDO is a memory play with music told from the point of view of an 88-year-old man reckoning with his past and his identity. EDGARDO explores the traumatic effects of childhood separation and of losing one's family and one's religion in the context of tumultuous political and social change.
